local knowledge
Life is full, and so is the Trentham diary, with events to amuse and delight all tastes. Hunt for bric-a-brac, antiques, truffles, berries. Go hiking, fishing, photographing or art gallery viewing. Indulge in arthouse movies, poetry readings, health spas, and degustation menus. And stock up at cellar door wineries, farmers markets, craft markets and local shops. There's a golf course, a swimming pool, a bowling club and tennis courts. And there's something happening every week at Trentham.
History
Surrounded on three sides by the Wombat State Forest, Trentham began life as a foresting town.
In the 1850s, timber was in endless demand for gold mine construction and Trentham prospered, as its grand homesteads and formidable hotels attest. The heritage streetscape retains all its pioneer charm, with wide verandahs and quirky embellishments. But with logging all but phased out today, much has changed. The region's rich soils have given rise to fine wines and highest quality organic produce. These in turn have attracted the gourmet and the vigneron, and resulted in some of Victoria's most renowned restaurants.
Natural Mineral Springs
Famous natural spring waters continue to give refreshment and healing as they have done since the Aboriginal Dreamtime. 'Take the waters' and revive at any of the many spas in this famous region.
Trentham Falls
Victorias highest single-drop waterfall will take your breath away. Swelling mists rise as the roaring whitewaters of the Coliban River cascade down a 33 metre basalt cliff face. Picnic or hike, or just appreciate the sheer natural beauty. (Even more fun with a raincoat!)
Trentham Golf Club
Friendly and convivial, Trentham's picturesque 18-hole golf course is 5268 metres par 70 for men and 4925 metres par 71 for women. Offers golfing treks to Barham, womens' games and events, free group lessons for beginners and lots of social gatherings and events. The Clubhouse boasts a great bar, generous meals and snacks and outdoor barbeques are available for all visitors.
The Cosmopolitan Hotel
After a devastating fire in 2005, the Cosmo is now in the very safe hands of owner Rod Hughes. Restoration is underway, beginning with stage one: The Stables. Set in the rambling garden grounds behind the hotel, the painstakingly restored Stables is a hive of activity. It comprises a fine dining hall, bar and a packed live music calendar. Definitely worth a visit, and just a stroll across the road from TWIGS ON HIGH. (No driving home, no designated driver required!)
Truffle Hunting
The Trentham region is renowned for its treasured nuggets anchored to local oak and hazelnut trees. There's a good chance you'll be dinning on the local 'black gold' truffle - a memorable gourmet experience.
Trentham Sunday Market
Local traders, provedores İand makers of all kinds of table-fare and crafts bring out their wares every fourth Sunday, just for you.
Trentham Farmers' Market
Held every third Saturday of the month in the Trentham Town Square, just across the way from TWIGS ON HIGH. A fantastic selection of dairy and goats cheeses, fresh honey, eggs and live poultry, preserves, potatoes and sourdough breads, organic and conventional produce, olive products, plants and fresh flowers, organic and conventional wines and an assortment ofİnatural farm products. And all proceeds go back into to the community.
Wombat State Forest
Hike the volcanic flanks of Mount Franklin or the Lerderderg State Park and its 300-metre gorge.
Over 69 hectares of forest, filled with wildlife and over 100 species of wildflowers and orchids.
Hanging Rock
A place of rare beauty, this is a very eerie eyrie, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. The physical beauty of Hanging Rock is surpassed only by its legendary spiritual persona. A craggy rock outcrop formed 6 million years ago, it is lodged firmly into our history books by crafty bushrangers and enraptured movie-star schoolgirls. The beauty and drama is of Hanging Rock is not to be missed.
Three times a year Hanging Rock is host to horse-racing picnics, and the gourmet Harvest Picnic is celebrated here each February.
Garden Lovers
Trentham is positioned amidst some of the finest gardens in Victoria. Surrounding towns like Malsbury, Kyneton and Macedon all boast fine Botanic Gardens. Victoria's Open Garden Scheme in both Spring and Autumn will gain you access to quaint cottage gardens styled with rockwalls and drooping hollyhocks, and also to the highly specialised Garden of St Erth Nursery in Blackwood and the Mt Macedon Horticultural Society's Rare Plant Fair each September.
Wineries
The high altitude and cool air of Trentham and surrounds is the perfect climate for grape growing.
A local name of 'Macedon' has been chosen to define the area's methode champenoise sparkling wines, and excellent chardonnay and pinot noir wines are produced in local family wineries.
Try a visit to Bindi, Hanging Rock, Curly Flat, Granite Hills and Cope-Williams wineries.
